The Product Development Process Team

In addition to creating an effective development process, companies must organize business functions to implement the process effectively.

There is a direct correspondence between the process and the development team, using the process outlined in the previous post it is possible to list the required features.

These are the business functions employed in product development:

  • Product Management
  • Marketing
  • Design
  • Engineering
  • Project Management
  • Manufacturing
  • Quality
  • Commercial

Each function doesn't need to be performed by a different person. Typically, in startups or smaller companies, some roles are performed by one person, usually one of the founders.

In any case, each function is necessary for the proper development of the product. This is true whether or not there is a codified structure with specialized departments for each.

Product Management:

Product management is a discipline that deals with the management of products throughout their lifecycle: from conception to implementation and development in the marketplace.

The Product Manager is responsible for directing and coordinating the process of developing and launching a product to ensure that it meets customer needs and company goals.

Marketing:

Marketing plays an important role in the product development process, helping to define, position, and promote the product effectively.

The ultimate goal of marketing is to create awareness, interest, and demand for the product. This will contribute to the product's success in the marketplace.

Design:

The designer has an essential role; his task is to define the shape of the product. In studying the form, he must consider all aspects of it.

It is a synthesis that brings together all the contributions of the development team and synthesizes them into a form that best represents the product being developed.

Engineering:

Engineering encompasses all the technical activities necessary for product development: mechanical designers, electronic designers, and software programmers involved in the study and implementation of product functionality.

Project Management:

Project management is the set of practices, methods, tools, and skills used to plan, organize, coordinate, and control the activities necessary to complete a project.

A project manager is responsible for managing and overseeing the project from start to finish, ensuring that customer requirements are met, timelines are adhered to, and the project is completed within the allotted budget.

Manufacturing:

Manufacturing in the product development process is concerned with the actual realization of the physical product according to the design and specifications established in the earlier stages of development.

It is his responsibility to manufacture the product according to the design specifications and quality controls to ensure that the final product meets the required standards.

Quality:

Quality management in the product development process is concerned with ensuring that the final product meets the required standards.

This is achieved through the implementation of quality procedures, tests, controls, and standards designed to reduce defects, improve customer satisfaction and increase product competitiveness in the marketplace.

Sales:

Salespeople play a role in the final stages of product development, collaborating on product management and promotion.

They are primarily involved in activities related to product marketing and customer interaction.
